The Raw Truth: How Our Kitchen Became a Whole-Prey Crime Scene
When you share a house with two Maine Coon titans, your kitchen ceases to be a human food prep area. It becomes a high-security tactical zone. The reason? We made the executive decision to transition the beasts to a specialized raw, whole-prey diet.
We did it for their health. We did it to honor their wild, majestic heritage.
What we actually did was open a portal to absolute domestic chaos.
Clocking Into the Morning Shift
Every morning at 7:00 AM, I officially clock into my unpaid shift as the onsite catering staff for two 18-pound monsters. The menu features ground rabbit and jumbo raw mice. Sounds exotic and apex-predator-chic, right?
The reality is a workplace hazard.
Prepping whole-prey mice while keeping Onyx—formally known as the Chaos Gremlin—off the counter is a full-body workout. Onyx is a menace in a fur coat. He is completely food-crazed and has zero concept of boundaries, math, or personal space. The second the freezer drawer opens, he goes full psycho mode.
He utilizes his go-go gadget arms to launch an immediate counter-raid on the plastic bags. He will literally lay his entire 18-pound frame on the line to steal a frozen mouse before it’s even thawed. I spend 20 minutes doing a deadpan wrestling match, trying to push a furry refrigerator off the cutting board while he smacks me in the face because the service isn't fast enough.
[KITCHEN COUNTER RISK ASSESSMENT]
Onyx: 18 lbs of raw weight, zero brakes, 100% greed.
Strategy: High-velocity counter lunges, go-go-gadget arm swipes.
Status: Active Threat.I am just trying to live my life, Onyx. I haven't even had my Starbucks yet.
The Soul-Piercing Enigma vs. The Bowl
Meanwhile, the other half of the Maine Characters drama is unfolding on the kitchen floor.
Obsidian—our majestic, smoky little man—looks like an ethereal creature pulled straight from an ancient, enchanted forest. He has these massive, soul-piercing eyes that look like they have gazed into the deep architecture of the void. He looks like a stone-cold killer who should be tracking game through the snowy peaks of Siberia.
Then, I put the food bowl down.
And the system completely glitches.
Obsidian approaches his raw meal and his internal monologue instantly hits screen-saver mode. The single brain cell upstairs just completely reboots. He will stare at a piece of ground rabbit with the intense struggle of a grocery store self-checkout machine trying to scan a single lime. Unexpected item in the bagging area. He has absolutely no idea how to operate his own mouth. Half the time, he forgets the food is there and wanders into the corner to play with a rogue plastic wrapper, happy as can be.
The contrast is breathtaking. We have one cat who is willing to commit domestic terrorism for a raw mouse, and another who looks like a mythical deity but possesses the everyday intelligence of a broken toaster.
The Post-Breakfast Drag Strip
Once the raw food is finally consumed and the kitchen looks like a crime scene, the real fun begins.
Onyx, fueled by raw protein and unearned confidence, hits his post-breakfast adrenaline rush. He leaves the kitchen, sprints into the living room, and treats our 16-foot home-built cat tree like a vertical drag strip. He does high-altitude parkour at Mach 5, launching his massive body from shelf to shelf, making the drywall brackets fight for their absolute lives.
He didn’t even want to climb for the view; he just wanted to find Obsidian and wreck his peace with a 16-foot body slam.
So, if you’re reading this thinking about starting your own raw feeding journey with a giant breed, let this be your warning. It’s great for their coats, it’s amazing for their energy, but your kitchen will never belong to you again. You will be held hostage by a meat-head, judged by a gorgeous himbo, and you'll learn to handle raw rodents while entirely sleep-deprived.
But hey... at least they look stunning while holding our household hostage.
The cleaning staff is officially clocking out.
